Asma Rabiei
Asma Rabiei is a PhD researcher in Environmental Hydrology and Water Resources at the University of Melbourne, with a background in water engineering, hydraulic structures, and fluid mechanics.
Supervised by Professor Andrew Western, with co-supervision from Associate Professor Jimmy Philip and Professor Joseph Klewicki, her research brings together environmental hydrology and fluid mechanics to investigate thermal stratification and mixing in riverine systems. Her project combines field monitoring and event-based analysis to examine how stratification in river waterholes responds to changing flow and weather conditions.
Using direct field observations, the research investigates how stratification forms, persists, weakens, and breaks down, and how these changes are linked to dissolved oxygen depletion and fish-kill risk. The project aims to identify the physical drivers of stratification and mixing and translate field observations into practical engineering knowledge that can support water-resource assessment, monitoring, and decision-making in low-flow river systems and connected waterholes.
